Welcome to the Big Data Laboratory at Kangwon National University!

β€œWe design core algorithms for the next generation of data systems.”

Our laboratory is dedicated to pioneering the core algorithms that power modern data systems. We design algorithms to make these systems fundamentally faster, more efficient, and more scalable, while simultaneously enabling them to understand and act on the semantic meaning of data.

The exponential growth of data is rapidly outstripping the capabilities of current data systems. Without a paradigm shift in how we process this information, the quality of the AI-driven services we rely on, from the generative AI that reshapes our daily interactions to the scientific discovery that defines our future, is not just at risk of stagnation, but of inevitable degradation. Our research philosophy is centered on the conviction that the foundational algorithms governing these systems represent both the critical bottleneck and the greatest lever for innovation. We believe that true advancement comes not from incremental improvements, but from rethinking these core principles to unlock new frontiers in performance and intelligence.

Our research agenda is driven by two primary, interconnected thrusts. Our work in these areas includes, but is not limited to, the following:

1) Algorithms for Scalable and Efficient Data Systems: This thrust is dedicated to designing the foundational algorithms that enable data systems to operate at extreme scales with maximum performance. We address core architectural bottlenecks and develop novel methods, ensuring sustained efficiency and scalability in real-world environments.

2) Algorithms for Data Intelligence: This thrust focuses on embedding deep intelligence into the core of data systems. We design algorithms that enable systems to comprehend and reason about the meaning of data, while also tackling the computational challenges of deploying sophisticated AI and machine learning models at scale. Our goal is to make advanced data intelligence both powerful and practical.
